LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- Residents in and around Douglas County are asked to be on the lookout for a prisoner who escaped custody Monday (10/29).

Lawrence Police say Deon Gregory Routt, 22, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was being transported by a private security company through Lawrence. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the transport vehicle stopped in the area of 23rd and Louisiana to check on one of the prisoners. At that time, officials say, Routt ran from the vehicle, headed southeast.

Officers from the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff's Office, along with a canine unit from the Kansas Highway Patrol, searched the area for several hours.

Later Monday evening a possible sighting was reported near 15th and Haskell Avenue. Authorities canvassed that area as well, but Routt was not found.

He is described as a 22 year old, black male, standing 5'5" tall, weighing 140 pounds. He was arrested for Sexual Assault on a Child.

Anyone who sees Routt should call 911.
