WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- An inmate at the Sedgwick County jail has died of apparent natural causes, according to the sheriff's office.
Around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, an inmate was found unresponsive in a one-man cell. Medical staff began chest compressions until fire crews and EMS arrived, but he was pronounced dead soon after.
He's been identified as 59-year-old John Daniel Price, who was in jail awaiting trial on felony charges. According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, Price had been under medical care for various conditions while in custody.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and sheriff investigators were notified, per protocol, and an investigation is underway. An autopsy has also been scheduled.
More than 28,000 people were booked into the jail in 2012, with 2 suicides and 3 natural deaths of in-custody inmates. This year, more than 18,000 have been booked and this is the third person to die of natural causes while in custody.
