TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Fire officials say the man killed in an accident on I-70 Wednesday night died of the fire that followed the wreck.

Police identified the man Thursday as 46-year oldChristopher Ginzel of Topeka.

Police say Ginzel crashed his SUV in the westbound lanes of I-70 near 3rd Street just before 5 pm Wednesday. The vehicle then burst into flames. Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

Fire officials said Thursday night that the coroner ruled Ginzel's death was caused by thermal injuries.

Westbound I-70 was closed from 4th Street to 1st Street for more than five hours while crews investigated the accident.

Topeka Fire officials say Ginzel's death is the city's fourth fire-related death of 2011.
