INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) -- Authorities are investigating after a house explosion Tuesday rocked an Independence neighborhood.
Firefighters were called about 12:30 p.m. to the single-story wood framed home in the 2400 block of South Vermount Street, located just south of 23rd Street and Sterling Avenue.
Officer Tom Gentry, a police spokesman, said the house was flattened and investigators do not know the cause of the explosion at this time.
Police said no one was home at the time but some animals. No people were injured in the blast.
Witnesses in the neighborhood said moments after the explosion there was a huge plume of white smoke and a bad smell.
Surrounding neighbors are staying inside their home at this time in case the fumes are toxic.
No other details were immediately available.
