House Approves Bill To Restrict Political Fundraising By Public Unions

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas House has given initial approval to a bill restricting political fundraising by public unions.

The measure passed 66 - 54 during Wednesday's session.

The measure prohibits groups representing teachers and government workers from automatically deducting money from members' paychecks to finance political activities.

Critics say the bill is part of a broader campaign against union activities. But supporters contend they're trying to protect teachers and other government workers from being coerced into contributing to political activities they don't support.

A final house vote on the bill is scheduled for Thursday.
