Hayden High Freshman Aims To Spark Peer Interest In Politics

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A local high school student is working to get others involved in politics.

Matthew Gatschet, a freshman at Hayden High School, started a "Teenage Republican Chapter," or TARS, for Shawnee County. He says he was spurred to action out of frustration over the Supreme Court decision on the federal health care reform law.

Tuesday night, the group gathered to hear from Dr. Kipp Van Camp, who's the father of a group member. He spoke to the group about a book he wrote on the health care reform law.

Both the young people and adults agree this is a great way to learn about politics.

Students from Hayden, Washburn Rural and various home schools all participate in the group.

Matthew says he's learned hard lessons about getting people involved in a new organization. He says no one attended his first meeting, so his grandfather offered to buy pizza for the next meeting, which perhaps caused it to draw more interest and attract a decent-sized group.
