TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The City of Topeka is celebrating a major milestone.
It's the city's 159th birthday today! Some of the first permanent settlers to the area were three French-Canadian brothers in the 1840's.
On December 5th of 1854, nine men met near the Kansas River to draw up an agreement that later became the basis for the "Topeka Association," which was responsible for early growth in the area.
The Kansas territory was the 34th state admitted to the union in 1861.
At that time, Topeka was chosen as the Capital, Dr. Charles Robinson was the first Governor.
