TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Recent graduation rates for Kansas students who finish school within four years, show good news and not so good news in Topeka.
The Auburn-Washburn district graduated 95.5% of its seniors in the 2011-2012 school year.
The bad news, Topeka's USD 501 graduated just 68.8%of its students. The state-wide graduation rate was 85%.
One of the main issues in Topeka Public Schools comes in the minority student areas. Auburn-Washburn is a suburban district with relatively few minority students. An issue that superintendent of 501 Julie Ford believes makes it difficult to compare the two.
"Some of the challenges our students face would surprise the community. They may have to work another job or dont have parents readily available. We will work on it and it will get better," said Ford.
Other Shawnee County Schools, Silver Lake, Seaman and Shawnee Heights all had graduation rates over 90%.
