TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- After two years of extreme drought, the governor's drought response team is looking at ways to minimize the effects on Kansas.
Officials with the City of Wichita briefed the group on the state of their city's water resources and potential plans to mitigate the effects of continued drought.
Some of the ideas being discussed are voluntary water restrictions, reducing outdoor water use, boosting well field capacity and developing more groundwater sources.
Tracy Streeter, director of the Kansas Water Office, says he thinks initiating well field negotiations to extend the water supply seems to be the most promising strategy as of now, but that even the water that would become available as a result would not be indefinite.
Wichita's dealt with looming water shortages because Cheney Reservoir, which provides the city with 60 percent of its water, is projected to dry up in August 2015 if the drought persists.
