TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A young girl was honored at the Statehouse Friday for her efforts promoting Arbor Day.

Callie Arnold from Hillsboro won the "Trees Are Terrific and Kansas Forests Are, Too" poster contest.

After honoring Callie, Gov. Sam Brownback signed a proclamation for Arbor Day. He encouraged people to continue planting trees and shrubs and maintaining them.

Brownback then got his hands dirty to re-enforce the message. He stepped outside to join Topeka Mayor Larry Wolgast, Callie and others in planting a tree on the south lawn of the Statehouse.

Arbor Day is April 26.
