Manhattan Area Technical College Presented With $23,000 Check

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Governor Sam Brownback was in Manhattan Wednesday afternoon to present a check at Manhattan Area Technical College.

$23,000 was awarded to the USD 383 school district, honoring 23 students who received industry recognized certifications. $1,000 is donated for every student that achieves their certificate while in high school.

In total, just under $1.2 million was given from the state to school districts across Kansas. The donations come as part of a state-wide program that encourages technical education in high school.

"I ran on saying that we need more students when they get out of high school to be career and college ready," said Brownback. "And we’ve got a lot more that are going to be career ready, and my hope is as well that we continue to improve that scale on those that are college ready and that our college rankings go up."

Over the past three years enrollment in technical education has increased by 200%.
