TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- Thirty-five teams competed in a golf tournament this morning that will benefit the families of fallen officers

The golf tournament was at Lake Shawnee Golf Course and was held in honor of Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly.

All the proceeds will go toward the group Kansas Cops, which helps send the families of fallen officers to support programs throughout the country and sends survivors to National Police Week in Washington D.C. in May.

One surviving mother told 13 News how important these events are for reaching out to those families.

"It's camaraderie. There's that connection there, you're there to help them," Karen Bohlender said. "You can help each other get through the times, and if they need to talk to someone they can give us a call."

The Bohlender family lost their son, Charles Bohlender Jr., who was a Topeka police officer, on June 13, 2000. His helicopter crashed while they were assisting ground officers during a burglary alarm at a home improvement store.

The Fraternal Order of Police #3 presented a $9,000 check to Kansas Cops. The group Ride For Cops also donated $3,000.
