Freezing Rain Blamed For Several Friday Morning Accidents


TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - For the second Friday morning in a row, drivers are contending with slick road conditions and authorities are being called to work several accidents.

Shawnee County authorities responded to an injury rollover accident just before 5:30 a.m. on eastbound I-70 near SW Carlson Road. The extent of injuries is unknown.

Dispatch confirmed with 13 News these other accidents, which were reported between 5:30 and 6 a.m.:

- U.S. 75 just north of Lower Silver Lake Road - two injury accidents
- Truck rollover near SW 45th & Fairlawn Road

The Topeka Police Department and Shawnee County Sheriff's Office are in Phase III accident reporting. That means authorities will only investigate accidents involving injury or hit and runs. Anyone else involved in an accident is encouraged to refer that to police headquarters at their earliest convenience.

8:20a.m. Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says they have gone back to normal accident reporting standards. Topeka Police still operating in phase 3.

7:10a.m. Wabaunsee County - no problems reported by the dispatch office.

7:05 a.m. Lyon County - 1/4 inch ice the northern part of county multiple accidents especially Americus and Hwy 56

6:55 a.m. Riley County Manhattan, No accidents reported. No reported road problems.

6:50a.m. Pottawatomie County roads reported as slick but being treated

6:40a.m.
-KHP reports I-70 continued icy and multiple accidents.

6:20 a.m.
- I70 Topeka and west Icy conditions
- 75 Hwy Topeka and north Icy conditions

Be mindful of parking lots and sidewalks being icy as well.
