TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__ For the 61st year, 75 students from schools from all over Shawnee County competed for the coveted Shawnee County Spelling Bee crown.

With the correct spelling of lanai, Ethan Sun, a fourth grader from Jay Shideler was triumphantly crowned Shawnee County's best speller.

Lanai is Hawaiian for a porch or veranda.

The students gathered at Whitson Elementary School and included kids from 4th through 8th grade.

Win or lose all participants were thrilled to be along for the ride.

Both Ethan Sun and 2nd place winner Jude Wright, a fourth grader from Meadows Elementary, will be added to the Topeka Capital Journals Regional Spelling Bee at Seaman High School on Saturday march 8th.
