Four Groups Interested In Running Helen Hocker Theatre

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Four groups submitted proposals to keep the curtains open at the Helen Hocker Theater.

Randy Luebbe, Shawnee County's Recreation Director,
says the four proposals came from the board of directors of the Helen Hocker Theatre; the Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy; SMG, the company that runs the Kansas Expocentre; and an individual, Bruce Woolpert.

The deadline to submit proposals was 5pm Monday.

Shawnee County Commissioners requested proposals from outside entities to run the theater, deciding the timing was right after the theater's director Jo Huseman retired. Commissioners said they believe having someone else manage the program instead of Parks and Rec might increase efficiency.

Commissioners are expected to appoint a selection committee at their next meeting Monday. The group would review the proposals and make a recommendation.
