FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) - A conversion process for more than 500,000 guns began Wednesday morning at Fort Riley.

Officials from Program Executive Office Soldier visited the 1st Infantry Division today to observe the conversion of previously fielded M4 carbines to the M4A1 configuration.

Big Red One units are the first to have their M4s upgraded as part of the Army’s M4 Product Improvement Program.

The M4A1 has a slightly heavier barrel, which gives the weapon a greater sustained rate of fire, full-automatic capability, ambidextrous fire control and more.

The Modification Work Order conversions at Fort Riley will continue into June. The Armywide conversion process will run until 2020.
