Former KBI Deputy Director Set To Plead In Child Porn Case

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A former top lawman is set to make a plea Thursday to child sex charges.

Former Kansas Bureau of Investigation Deputy Director Kyle Smith was arrested in February on one count of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of interfering with law enforcement...

A criminal complaint alleges that sometime between November 7th and 15th 2013, Smith possessed a photo of a child under the age of 18 engaged in sexually explicit conduct. It goes on to allege Smith then knowingly concealed, destroyed or altered evidence, identified in one count as a computer and in the second a phone.

Smith's employment with the KBI ended November 26th 2013 without explanation.

A docket hearing was set for April 3rd, but court records show that's changed to a plea hearing at 8:30 am Thursday, March 27.
