TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Amidst severe weather throughout northeast Kansas Sunday, mother nature likely caused significant fire damage in north Topeka.

Topeka Police and fire crews responded to The Cottages of Topeka Apartments at 620 Lyman Road shortly after 11 a.m.

Fire officials believe a lightning strike ignited the blaze in the rooftops of two apartment homes.

Fire fighters used chainsaws and axes to attack rooftops and extinguish the flames.

No residents were harmed and monetary damages are not known at this time.

The Kansas Capital Chapter Red Cross has provided assistance to those affected by the fire.
