TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Investigators are blaming an mid-morning fire in central Topeka on the disposal of ashes from an ornamental back yard fire pit and have called it an accident.
Flames kindled in the back yard and spread to a nearby detached garage, behind a home at 2707 SW Harland Court. A neighbor spotted the blaze around 9:30 a.m. and called firefighters before going to notify more neighbors.
When emergency crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and fire pouring from the collapsed structure. While firefighters managed to keep the flames mostly contained to garage, two nearby homes suffered minor smoke and heat damage.
Nobody was injured in the fire. Investigators estimated it caused about $30,000 in damages - $20,000 to the garage and another $10,000 to its contents.
