TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The Equality House lived up to its name and hosted the first same sex wedding.

Kimberly Kidwell and Katie Short of Little Rock, Arkansas, celebrated their love and commitment with a marriage ceremony on the front lawn of the Equality House.

The exterior of the house is painted in distinctive rainbow colors representing the LGBTQ community. It is located across the street from Westboro Baptist Church. The mission of the Equality House is to conquer hatred and bigotry with love and compassion.

Wedding-goers said standing with Kimberly and Katie in a spirit of celebration will serve as an important symbol to fight for equality.
