Emporia State Coaches Bring Cancer Fight To State Capitol

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Stingers were up high, as two Emporia State coaches donned suits and sneakers and brought their fight against cancer to the Statehouse.

Emporia State University Football Coach Garin Higgins and Basketball Coach Shaun Vandiver joined Kansas Legislators and cancer survivors in the Capitol Rotunda.

The visit was part of the American Cancer Society's annual Lobby Day, urging lawmakers to support policies to combat cancer.

Both Emporia coaches talked how the disease has touched their families.

"It's a vicious cruel disease that has no borders or parameters. So anything i can do ton help i'm here," Shaun Vandiver, Emporia State University Men's Head Basketball Coach.

"We're lucky he had enough faith to get through it. So, it's a big thing for me and it's a great opportunity to be here at the State Capitol to talk about cancer and how important the awareness is," Garin Higgins, Emporia State University Head Football Coach.

This year alone, more than 14,000 Kansans will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 5,000 will lose their battle with the disease.
