TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Education activists are speaking out against the use of the Common Core curriculum in Kansas classrooms. Opponents spoke to lawmakers Thursday about why Kansas should opt out of the using the program's education standards for English, language arts and math.

They say the focus on making sure students in different states are learning the same material violates federal law. They also estimate it costs Kansas $50-150 million.

Supporters say the program provides teachers with a guideline for instruction.

The Common Core is currently implemented in 45 states.
