TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two men's quick action to save a life... earned them honors as champions of character.

Sylvan Coles and Frank Ragsdale received the honor at Wednesday's Safe Streets meeting.

They were at the North Topeka YMCA in December when Bruce Pfeiffer collapsed in the locker room and lost consciousness. He'd suffered a heart attack, and Coles and Ragsdale performed CPR until emergency responders arrived.

Without their actions, doctors say Pfeiffer likely would not have survived.

Both men say they had regular CPR training through their workplaces. Pfeiffer says he's living proof it works.

The duo was nominated for the award by former Shawnee Co. Sheriff Richard Barta.
