Dental Supplies Donated To Domestic Violence Survivors

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Groups facing various obstacles in their everyday lives are getting one small relief when it comes to dental care.

Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation worked with Kansas Dept. of Corrections contractor Greenbush and Topeka Correctional Facility to provide dental supplies to people served by programs through the YWCA and Kansas Legal Services.

Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation donated supplies for TCF inmates to create more than 2,000 bags of toothbrushes, floss and other dental care items. The inmates take part in the facility's dental technician program.

The bags will be distributed to participants in the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment, Kansas Legal Services' Employment Training Division Topeka Moving Ahead Program graduates. T-MAP is a 14-week program teaching life skills to people who are transitioning from homelessness, while the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment assists victims of domestic violence.

“We’re so appreciative to the residents and staff of TCF," said Laura Burton of the YWCA. "Many families have to leave their old homes quickly. It’s important we are able to meet basic needs when they come to us.”

“We serve populations who are chronically homeless, on cash assistance and/or disabled," Lea Vincent of Kansas Legal Services said. "Many of our participants lack the necessities for proper oral hygiene. This donation of gift bags will help them and give them confidence."

Greenbush is the contractor responsible for teaching the inmates who participate in the dental technician program.
