WELLINGTON, Kan. (KAKE) — A woman is dead after a crash on the Kansas turnpike near Wellington.

The crash happened shortly before noon Wednesday in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile post 21.

Rachel Bell with the Kansas Turnpike Authority said a six-vehicle paint striping crew was traveling north, just north of the Wellington interchange. The striping vehicle was in the passing lane, with five other vehicles behind to alert oncoming traffic.

Bell said the group was approached by a vehicle traveling at highway speed. The SUV moved around the first truck, before reportedly veering back into the passing lane and crashing into the back of the second vehicle in line.

The woman driving the SUV, 25-year-old Urmila Sharma of Kansas City, Kansas, was killed. The 52-year-old man driving the turnpike vehicle was injured, but his current condition is unknown.

Traffic had been down to one lane, but the accident scene has since been cleared.
