ST. MARYS, Kan. (WIBW) -- While shoppers battled Black Friday crowds, fire crews spent the morning battling a fire at the Nemaha County Co-op in St. Marys.

Officials say a pile of wood from an old building that was being torn down caught fire sometime around 2:00 a.m. None of the main buildings were affected.

Highway 24 was shut down as crews continue to battle the fire. It re-opened by 6:30 a.m.

Officials say an ember from the fire floated to a nearby building's rooftop, but it was quickly extinguished by fire fighters on scene.

The St. Marys Star ran a story Wednesday about the demolition of the grain elevator at the co-op because it's no longer structurally sound. The article states the wood grain elevator was being razed "the next couple weeks."
