Murder Suspects Face Long List Of Charges In Kansas, Nebraska

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A couple arrested in Nebraska following a shootout with police are now officially charged in a Topeka murder.

Shawnee County District Court records show 33-year-old Michael Engstrom and his wife, 34-year-old Jamie Engstrom, face counts of first-degree felony murder and attempted second degree murder, along with two counts of aggravated robbery. Michael Engstrom also faces an additional count of felony possession of a firearm.

They both face a long list of charges in Nebraska.

Prosecuters filed more than 30 counts against the Engstroms in Johnson County, Nebraska alone.

Michael is charged with at least 20 felonies, including seven counts of using a firearm to commit a felony and five counts of attempted second-degree murder. His other charges include:

Unlawful discharge of a firearm (intentionally firing at an occupied motor vehicle
Child abuse
Resisting arrest through use of a deadly or dangerous weapon
Two counts of criminal mischief
Operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest
Two counts of possession of a firearm to commit a felony

If convicted, Michael could serve at least 40 years in prison.

Jaime is charged with 12 felonies including:

Aiding and abetting unlawful discharge of a firearm (intentionally firing at an occupied motor vehicle
Three counts of aiding and abetting attempted murder in the second degree
Child abuse
Aiding and abetting resisting arrest through use of a deadly or dangerous weapon
Aiding and abetting criminal mischief
Aiding and abetting operating a motor vechicle to avoid arrest
Four counts of aiding and abetting use of a firearm to commit a felony

If Jaime is convicted, she could serve at least 24 years in prison.

A Johnson County judge set both their bonds at $4 million.

Nebraska police say the Engstroms held up a Casey's General Store in Pawnee County, Nebraska and were involved in several shoot-outs with law enforcement as they were chased into Johnson County. A trooper was grazed by a bullet during the gunfire.

A Pawnee County judge set Michael's bail for $250,000 and Jamie's for $50,000.

They remain jailed in Nebraska where they will be seen in county court March 21 in Pawnee County and April 10 in Johnson County.

The Engstroms escaped to Nebraska on February 13 after they were allegedly involved in the shooting of two people in a Topeka apartment complex near 12th and Topeka Blvd. It resulted in the death of 35-year-old Ricky Mitchell. Bridget Gakle was injured.

Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor said he will wait to prosecute the pair after the cases are finished in Nebraska.

The 14-year-old girl who was with Michael and Jaime at the time of the chase and arrest is now in Kansas protective custody.
