TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A Topeka city councilman has set his last day in office as he transitions to a new role with Shawnee County.
Bob Archer will resign his Dist. 7 seat on Jan 13. He'll take his oath the following day as a member of the Shawnee County Commission.
Archer informed the city clerk's office of his decision Wednesday in a letter. City ordinance requires council members to resign if they take another elected office.
Dist. 2 Rep. John Alcala was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. He hasn't said yet when he'll leave the council.

Dear Mrs. Younger:
As required by Sec. A2-28 TMC, I do hereby submit my resignation as Councilman effective January 13, 2013.
I was elected in 2009 largely due to a promise to bring civility, respect, and teamwork to the Council. I believe I have kept that commitment.
I am particularly proud of my assistance in the consolidation of the City and County Parks and Recreation departments. Also, I have helped successfully fight against property tax increases and wasteful City spending.
Most important, I have worked hard to serve my constituents. Recently, one of my constituents wrote an e-mail that simply said… “You help people.” I think that’s the most important thing any elected official can do.
