Topeka Blvd. Bridge Reopened Following Sheriff-Police Collision

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Shawnee County Sheriff's Deputy and a Topeka Police Officer were taken to a hospital after their cars collided on the Topeka Blvd. Bridge.

Shawnee County Dispatch told 13 News that the collision happened just after midnight Tuesday morning. They said both the officer and the sheriff's deputy reported the accident to dispatchers after it happened.

The Sheriff's office reported that the the Topeka Police Officer was southbound on the bridge and disregarded assisting the Sheriff’s Office to go to another call.

The Topeka Police Officer attempted a U-turn on the bridge and was struck by the Sheriff’s Office patrol car. Both vehicles came to rest in the northbound lanes of traffic.

Dispatchers said both the deputy and the officer were not seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital to be checked out.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

The bridge was reopened and back to normal about 4:30 a.m.. If any additional information is available, we will update the story.
