TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The City of Topeka plans to appeal the latest USDA findings concerning elephant care at the Topeka Zoo.
The USDA conducted an inspection August 28th in response to a complaint. The city said Wednesday that the zoo was cited for violating the Animal Welfare Act as a result of the investigation.
However, the city also said it will not release details of the preliminary findings because of the appeal. City Manager Jim Colson told council members at their meeting Tuesday night that the USDA found three issues, which he deemed minor.
Earlier Tuesday, the zoo announced it received reaccreditation from the Association of Zoos and aquariums. Zoo Director Brendan Wiley said the recognition proves the facility lives up to the intent of the Animal Welfare Act.
