TOPEKA, Kan. -- The City of Topeka will have a full shift of Street Maintenance workers arriving at 7 p.m. tonight to begin pretreating all primary and secondary routes ahead of tomorrow morning's precipitation. They will also work to complete any residential clean up that wasn't done during the daytime hours.
Street Maintenance staff, including 11 trucks, were activated at noon Sunday to perform additional work in residential areas.
Now that street crews have activated, they will stay activated until the clean up for the coming storm is complete. Ahead of the next snow event, City of Topeka crews would like to remind residents not to clear their driveway openings and sidewalks until our plows have been through their area, especially if they live along a primary or secondary route. This will help prevent having to clear driveways again after City crews clear streets, as sometimes openings can be plowed closed.
Street Maintenance officials will continue to monitor weather data as it is updated to adjust the City's approach to any changes. The City has also contacted contractors for the downtown hauling and heavy plowing programs. If they become necessary, they will be activated at the appropriate time.
The Topeka Fire Department would like to remind persons who remove snow from sidewalks and driveways to be conscious of where they relocate the snow.
Persons responsible for clearing commercial parking lots often obstruct access to hydrants by pushing piles of snow in front of, or around fire hydrants.
Fire officials share the reminder that nothing including snow/piles of snow, shall be placed or kept near fire hydrants, fire department inlet connections or fire-protection system control valves, in a manner that would prevent such equipment or fire hydrants from being immediately discernible. The fire department shall not be deterred or hindered from gaining immediate access to fire-protection equipment or hydrants.
A minimum of a three-foot clear space should be maintained around the circumference of fire hydrants.
