Wichita Children In Protective Custody After Teacher Noticed Burns

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE)— Three Wichita children are in police protective custody after a teacher noticed that one was suffering from facial burns.

Wednesday afternoon, a teacher at a Wichita school noticed that one her students, an 11-year-old girl, appeared to have chemical burns on her face. Police were notified and responded to the school.

Officers then went to the child's home and said they found poor living conditions. They took the girl, along with a 5-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy into protective custody and to a local hospital to be checked out.

The 11-year-old was admitted to the hospital's burn unit, suffering from chemical burns. Police say she was apparently burned on the 14th after getting into some bleach. The other children, one of whom has special needs, were released to the children's home.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is investigating and officers have questioned their 34-year-old mother, but she has not been arrested.

Police tell KAKE News that they have brought in services to help the woman get back on her feet. The investigation is ongoing.
