Child, Adult Injured In Shooting

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An adult and a child were injured Thursday when multiple gunshots were fired into their residence south of the Washburn University campus Thursday night.

Topeka Police say the reports came in just before 9:30 pm from the 2400 block of SW 22nd Park, which is south of 21st and MacVicar.

TPD Capt. Bill Cochran says multiple gunshots were fired from the street into a residence. A 23 year-old adult man and a 4-year old female child inside the residence were hit, but were expected to survive their injuries.

Cochran says officers were investigating whether the shots were fired from a vehicle or by a person or persons on foot. He did not know exactly how many shots were fired or whether more than one weapon was used.

Several other adults and children inside the residence were not harmed. However, Cochran says one man and one woman were taken from the home for questioning due to "circumstances ongoing" inside the residence that remained under investigation. He did not elaborate on the activity.

Officers remained on the scene late Thursday, searching for evidence. A police K9 also was being used. Cochran said officers continue following leads and had not yet developed suspect information to release.
