TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A large company and a young man both where honored as Champions of Character.
Safe Streets and the Topeka City of Character program presented the awards Wednesday during the Safe Streets monthly meeting at the Great Overland Station.
10-year-old Johnathan Kelly was honored for displaying initiative. Johnathan's grandfather nominated him recognition for all the young man did to help his mother, Wendy Kelly, during a serious injury.
The day's other honor went to the Target Distribution Center for its strong support of the Topeka area's National Night Out activities. Group leader Peter Martin accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
Topeka's National Night Out activities will take place Saturday, August 9. Safe Streets expects more than 10,000 people at events in 63 neighborhoods.
