Carjacking Suspects Now Face Federal Charges

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two men accused of carjacking two people and putting them in the trunk of a car have been indicted by a federal grand jury..

24-year-old Jakeem Coopwood and 20-year-old Lashon Stewart are charged in the September 30th incident.

Police say the two carjacked two people in Topeka and forced them into the trunk. They were found later on I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas, when the suspects got involved in a police chase, crashed the vehicle and ran. They were captured by Kansas state troopers after a foot chase.

13 News has learned the Shawnee County charges are dropped with both men now in federal court. The October 16th federal indictment charges Coopwood and Stewart with carjacking, brandishing a firearm in a crime of violence and, for Coopwood, an additional charge of felon in possession of a .22 caliber semi automatic pistol.
