TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Kansas National Guard soldier and Highway Patrol trooper is learning what it's like to be on the receiving side of help.

Master Sgt. Jeff Norling and his family accepted a Suzuki Forenza Wednesday from Terry Franz and the "Cars for Heroes" program.

The Norlings live in Reading. Jeff and his son were returning home from a fishing trip May 21st when they saw a tornado tearing through their town. His wife and daughter survived by taking cover in the master bathroon - the only room of the house still standing after the storm.

Avid volunteers, he says the family is touched by the support from family, friends and neighbors. He says it is often difficult to receive a gift, since they are accustomed to being the givers, but he says they're learning to accept it. He called the experience humbling.

Cars for Heroes hopes to help even more tornado survivors with transportation in the months ahead.
