Capitol Plaza Hotel Evacuation Ends

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- All clear. That's the word from the Topeka Police Dept. after hundreds of guests were cleared out of the Capitol Plaza Hotel on Friday.

But, they are still looking for the man who caused the evacuation in the first place. He reportedly walked up the the counter at the hotel, 1717 SW Topeka Blvd., around 2:00 p.m. set a bag on the counter, unleashed a string of threats, and left.

Hotel staff immediately called police who moved 300 to 350 hotel guests over to the Maner Conference Center in just 10 minutes.

Members of the bomb squad were called in and they determined the contents of the bag were not a threat, although they did not say what was actually in it.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing and police are still looking for the man. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Topeka Police Dept. at 785-368-9551 or Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
