MAIZE, Kan. (KAKE) — Police officers in Maize are investigating after a body was found in a car outside an apartment complex.
The discovery was made Monday morning at the Fieldstone Apartments, located at 5050 North Maize Road. Around 10:30 a.m., someone who lives at the apartment complex called police about a bad smell coming from a white sedan in the parking lot on the south side of the complex. When officers arrived, they found a body in the back of the car," Maize Chief of Police Matt Jensby said.
"It's been very creepy knowing that there has been a dead body so close to my children and I," said Stephanie Avants, whose window looks out over the crime scene.
Just before 3 p.m., the McPherson Police Department posted an update on their Facebook page saying the car belonged to a Wichita man who owned a sports bar in McPherson. Adam Sabri, 54, was last seen on February 9. More information on that story can be found by clicking here.
Because of the advance stage of decomposition, police estimate the body may have been there for months. They don't yet know if the body is that of Sabri, or the cause of death.
Many neighbors tell KAKE News back up the police's preliminary investigation. They say they've seen the car sitting in the lot for several months. They say the car has back windows that are tinted that make it nearly impossible to see inside.
"I usually park beside of it almost every day," Stephanie Avants said. "I just thought it was inoperable."
The neighbors say they didn't have any reason to think something was wrong with the car.
Just in the last several days though, as temperatures rose into the 90s, neighbors say they began to notice a bad smell around the apartment complex.
They say they're very unnerved to learn that smell was coming from a decomposing body in the car.
"I don't know what to say. It alarms me," Linda Barnhart said.
