TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Board of Education will continue to monitor how extensively school districts are teaching cursive handwriting.

The board met Wednesday to discuss the topic and look over results of a survey, but didn't make a decision as to whether it should be taken out of the curriculum.

Officials believe it is a useful skill to have, but there may be bigger subjects to focus on right now.

"My concern is that we have a lot of young people that their handwriting is just terrible," said Carolyn Campbell, State Board District 4 member. "I just feel like it's important to be able to write cursive...and legibly."

"Cursive writing may be one of those things that schools are having to make a decision on," said David Dennis, State Board District 10 member. "It's unfortunate but it's the world and education we live in today."

Board members will resume the discussion at next month's meeting.
