A 66-year-old Lawrence man was killed in a bicycle wreck in Douglas Co. on Wednesday. Cal Melick died after his bike was struck by a truck near Clinton Lake, according to the Douglas Co. Sheriff

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) – A Lawrence man was killed in a bicycle wreck in Douglas Co. on Wednesday. Cal Melick, 66, died after his bike was struck by a truck near Clinton Lake, according to the Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office.

A Washburn official confirmed Melick was a public services librarian at the university.

The Sheriff's Office said he was heading east in the 800 block of North 950 Road when his bike was struck by an oncoming Ford Ranger, which was in the process of passing another vehicle at the time.

The driver of the truck, 69 year-old Werner Anderson, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

They added that the the driver of the vehicle Anderson was passing did call and speak to detectives. On Wednesday, they requested the driver contact them.

This is the second tragedy to hit the Washburn family recently.

In June, head baseball coach died in a tree trimming accident at his home in Grantville.
