TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka Public Schools officials and Topeka Police are searching for the person who stole copper from buildings near Hummer Sports Park.

USD 501 employees heard noises inside some of the vacant buildings on the former Topeka State Hospital grounds around 1:30 pm Thursday and called police. USD 501 Director of School Safety Ron Brown said officers searched three buildings and tunnels that run underground but were unable to locate a suspect.

Brown said workers have been in and out of the buildings lately. On their stop Thursday, they found copper pipes coming out of the walls.

Anyone with any information on the copper thefts is asked to call 785-295-3730.
