TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka man arrested in connection with an attempted drowning of a four year-old girl has been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.

Thirty-seven year-old Brian Mahkuk will then return to court on September 11, 2014, according to the Shawnee Co. Courts. In July, he was booked on Attempted Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping charges.

Topeka Police say a girl was walking with a friend in the 1400 block of NE Quincy when Mahkuk approached, took her to a nearby yard, and held her underwater in a nearby swimming pool.

A witness was able to get to the child and get her to safety.
