TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An Aldersgate Village resident known for his sharp wit and good humor celebrated a major milestone Wednesday.
Guests turned out for cake and ice cream to help Bill Calwell celebrate his 106th birthday!
Calwell was born in 1908 in Wetmore. He served as a railroad executive with Rock Island Line for almost five decades and visited 39 countries in his life.
He loves to golf, and by the time he turned 50, he'd won many amateur championships.
"This is gratifying," said Calwell. "On the golf course you'd have to really do something to draw a crowd. Now, you just have to get a little older!"
Calwell remembers when gas was eight cents a gallon, and when he read about the Titanic sinking in the daily newspaper. His parents both lived to be 104.
