TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- One woman is flying high this weekend after being honored at the Amelia Earhart Festival.
Michele Stauffer was honored today with the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award in Atchison. The award is presented to to someone who triumphs over adversity and demonstrates that for women the sky is no longer the limit.
Stauffer began flying in 1975 simply for the fun of it. She worked for two aviation companies before founding Kansas Aircraft Corporation which is the exclusive Cessna dealer in Kansas City, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.
In 1993 she became the first woman to pilot the Russian SU-27 front line tactical fighter.
