Accident Closes 6th Street, Destroys Utility Pole

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Authorities say they are investigating the possibility alcohol was involved in an accident that shut down a stretch of SW 6th Street Tuesday morning.

Topeka Police say an officer found a pickup off the road, crashed into a utility pole near Security Benefit at 6:30 am Tuesday. The impact snapped the pole, crashing it onto the vehicle.

The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Westar crews closed 6th street near 1 Southwest Security Benefit Place, as they worked Tuesday morning to repair the damaged utility pole.

Westar's online power outage map indicated that between 1-50 customers were without power near the accident scene Tuesday. Westar hadn't confirmed that the outages were related to the crash Tuesday morning.
