TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The former treasurer of the Mayetta Rural Fire District in Jackson County is charged with embezzling.

67 year-old Richard Bontrager of Holton was charged in a U.S. District Court in Topeka with stealing more than $427,000 from the district.

Prosecutors say Bontrager managed the district's finances from 2008 to 2013 and would make checks payable to a fictitious company.

If convicted, Bontrager faces a maximum penalty of ten years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
