Belated Medals

A Southwest Kansas man has finally received his Bronze Star and five other medals -- almost 60 years after earning them in World War Two. Edward Lutz, of Spearville, received the medals from Republican
Congressman Jerry Moran, in a ceremony last month. Lutz's honors include a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, a World War Two Victory Medal, a World War Two Honorable Service lapel button, a marksman's badge and rifle bar -- and the Bronze Star, the nation's fourth-highest award for military service. It is awarded either for heroism in combat or meritorious service. Lutz earned his Bronze Star for meritorious service. He says he first found out about his awards when he saw them listed on his Army discharge papers -- but did not pursue them.
