Students are coming from as far as Alaska for a new community-college program in applied motorcycle science. Class began this week with 42 students enrolled at the newly built Harley-Davidson training center in Frontenac. Fort Scott Community College created the program with the blessing of Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle company says it needs people trained in both technical and management skills. Steve Vergara directs the center. Vergara says plans call for up to 60 new students next year. The school is also receiving inquiries from potential students in other countries. Senator Jim Barone of Pittsburg helped secure funding to get the program started. The Democratic lawmaker calls the enthusiasm from students nationwide ``economic development in action.''
