Topeka firefighters' union members Wednesday began a "vote of no confidence" election on Fire Chief Howard Giles.
Those who couldn't make it Wednesday will have a second chance to cast ballots Thursday.
Department Captain and union leader Kent Dederick says the union disagrees with Giles' leadership and management skills.
Despite that, Dederick says firefighters want to reassure the citizens of Topeka, "we are their fire department. We'll be there for them regardless and just hope that they find it in their hearts to support us by making whatever contacts they see appropriate."
Dederick says results of the "no confidence" vote will be known after Thursday's meeting.
The vote is non-binding.
City Manager Norton Bonaparte, Jr. released a statement after Wednesday night's meeting. It reads:
"The City of Topeka's Administration has great confidence in Topeka Fire Chief Giles' ability to lead. His passion for the job, his proven ability to lead during times of crisis, and his attention to detail and accountability are both admirable and an asset to the citizens of our community. We are looking forward to Chief Giles continuing to provide the leadership he is capable of providing. We understand that some firefighters might not agree with everything he does and are resistant to change, especially ideas coming from a fire chief hired from outside of the department. Differences of opinion are expected. We are confident he will continue to lead the department forward."
