The Kansas Highway Patrol says two state highway workers were killed on U.S. 59 in Douglas County when they were hit by a pickup truck that sped away around 9:45 Tuesday morning. A third worker was also hurt in the crash.

The Department of Transportation has identified one of the victims as Tyrone Korte, 30, of Seneca. He was an engineering technician who had worked for KDOT since November 2002.

KHP says Rolland Griffith, 24, of El Dorado was the second victim. Griffith as employed at Dustrol, Inc. in Towanda.

KHP says the third victim is 21-year-old Amanda Hopper of El Dorado. She was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Tuesday. There is no word on her condition.

The accident reportedly occurred South of Lawrence on U.S. 59, or about six miles North of the U.S. 56/59 Jct. where they were doing resurfacing work.

A trooper claimed to see the fleeing pickup headed south on the highway, then west on U.S. 56 into Osage County.

Osage County Sheriff's Deputies used stop sticks that flattened two of the trucks tires.

They were then able to get the truck to stop about a mile from where the stop sticks were used, and they apprehended two women in the vehicle just before 10:30 a.m..

KHP says Ramona Morgan, 48, of Chewelah, WA was driving during the chase and that Sabrina Morgan, 26, also of Chewelah, WA was the other person in the truck.

And as of 6 p.m. Tuesday night U.S. 59 was still closed where the accident happened.

The investigation of the accident is being investigated by the KHP and Douglas County Sheriff's office and assisted by the Osage County Sheriff's office.
